MacDonald to meet the Russians

AN opportunity to play against the Russians has been awarded to Michael MacDonald.

The Thunder Bay native was named to the Ontario Hockey League roster that will compete in the upcoming Subway Super Series that will pit all-star teams from the three Canadian Hockey Leagues against a Russian select squad.

MacDonald, a 19-year old forward with the London Knights, will suit up in game three of the six-match series, which will be played at the John Labatt Centre in London.

After 10 games in the OHL this season the former Fort William North Stars forward has nine points including four goals.

WEEKLY HONOUR: Some stellar play between the pipes earned a local goaltender recognition from her school.

Jessalyn Bogacki was named the most recent York University female athlete of the week for her on-ice efforts.

Bogacki, a first-year kinesiology and health science student turned aside 72 of 74 shots she faced in two games for the Lions women’s hockey team.

After a 42-save performance vs. No. 2 nationally ranked Laurier on Oct. 16 the former Thunder Bay Queens netminder came right back the next day making 30 stops to register her first CIS shutout, a 1-0 triumph over Waterloo.

WINNER WINNER: Travis Oleksuk continues to produce in the clutch for the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.

In last four games, all UMD victories, the junior forward has scored the game-winner in three of them while earning an assist on the other.

The trio of winning tallies supplied by Oleksuk are the most of any player in the entire NCAA so far this season.

With an active four-game point streak on the go for the 5-0-1 Bulldogs the talented forward has three goals, six assists and is a plus-8 in that span.

Also in NCAA women’s action over the weekend another Lakehead product in Lauren Turner notched her first collegiate goal helping her Adrian College Bulldogs defeat Cortland State 5-0 Saturday evening.

LEADERS: Fresh off a career-high four-point game Saturday Longlac’s Ben Gamache has jumped into a share for top spot in Alberta Junior Hockey League scoring.

The second-year forward with the Okotoks Oilers has 23 points in 17 games on 10 goals and 13 assists helping his club one point out of top spot in the AJHL south division.

Meanwhile in the ECHL Thunder Bay’s Trevor Kell has points in his first three games of the season and has the early club lead in offensive production for the Trenton Devils.

DIFFERENCE MAKER: Thunder Bay product Marcus Perrier picked a perfect time to score his first goal of the season.

The defenceman with the Sioux Falls Stampede buried the game-winner in overtime Saturday helping his side with their third straight United States Hockey League contest as they defeated Fargo 2-1.

The tally was the first winning goal in the three-year USHL career of the defensive blueliner.
