Panthers have work to do if Kompon is to make NHL history

AFTER getting bounced in the first two games of the Stanley Cup Final, the Florida Panthers have some serious work to do if they hope to capture the National Hockey League championship, and in turn help Jamie Kompon establish a new mark in the process.

On the bench staff of the Panthers, Kompon is looking to become the first person in NHL history to win a Stanley Cup, as an assistant coach, with three different teams.

Now in his 15th season behind the bench in the league, and first with Florida, the veteran assistant hopes to have his name engraved on the Stanley Cup for a third time.

The 56-year-old Thunder Bay native was part of his initial title-winning side back in 2012 when the upstart Los Angeles Kings won it all.

That year, Los Angeles was much like Florida this go around, just squeaking into the playoffs and entered the postseason as a No. 8 seed in their conference.

From there, the Kings were not to be denied on their way to the Cup.

The following campaign, Kompon joined the Chicago Blackhawks where he would celebrate a second consecutive title as his new club skated their way to the crown.

Those two teams, along with the Panthers in 2023, all feature other local connections on the squads, other than Kompon.

The Kings had Kenora’s Mike Richards in their line-up while the Blackhawks boasted Patrick Sharp skating for them, while Norm Maciver was Chicago’s assistant general manager.

With a trio of Stanley Cups triumphs of his own, Maciver currently serves as the Hawks’ associate GM.

Of course, the other Thunder Bay connections with Florida are the Staal brothers, Eric and Marc.

Eric is looking for his second Cup win while Marc is in search of his first.

Along with Kompon, two others have won Stanley Cup with a pair of different clubs.

Doug Jarvis accomplished the feat with both the Boston Bruins (2011) and the Dallas Stars (1999).

You also have Barry Smith in that group as he was part of titles claimed by the Detroit Red Wings (2002) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (1992).

Smith has actually been on the coaching staff of five Stanley Cup winners; two more with the Red Wings (1997 & ’98) and another in ’91 with the Penguins.

1ST GOAL NOTE: The last time and only other time a Lakehead product scored the opening goal of the Stanley Cup Final, prior to Eric Staal doing likewise for Florida in Game 1 Saturday, was Alex Delvecchio, nearly seven decades ago.

The Hockey Hall of Famer honoured member tallied first in the 1956 opener for Detroit against Montreal with a power play marker at 8:17 of the first period.

Meanwhile, Delvecchio also assisted on the initial goal in the first contest of the 1955 final.
